The Benefits of Whistleblowing System | Employment
Whistleblowing is a set of systematic actions aimed at promoting lawful, ethical, open and transparent operations within organizations in both the public and private sectors. This is done by exercising the right to freely express one’s opinion. The Whistleblowing Law helps prevent violations and harm to public interests while protecting whistleblowers from adverse consequences. In companies with more than 50 employees, having a whistleblowing system is mandatory. However, even in companies that do not meet the legal threshold, having well-organized processes can improve reputation, customer service quality, work environment, cost efficiency, work ethics, and more.
What Does a Whistleblowing System Provide?
By adopting the EU Whistleblower Directive, whistleblowing mechanisms help citizens participate in preventing various harms to public interests and ensure common EU standards for protecting whistleblowers. Implementing a whistleblowing policy within a company not only demonstrates good corporate governance and an open culture but also directly addresses several preventable issues:
1. Fraud, corruption, and unethical behavior;
2. Damage to reputation;
3. Escalation of problematic situations;
4. Occurrence of losses;
5. Lack of understanding.
How to Create a Whistleblowing System?
A specialist, working on behalf of a client, can develop a Whistleblowing Policy. This policy defines who a whistleblower is, the objectives of whistleblowing, the types of violations that warrant whistleblowing, the procedures for submitting a whistleblower report, and other guidelines, for example appointing responsible persons for receiving, registering, and reviewing reports, among other tasks.
